Great Sandy National Park protects World Heritage sand island and coastal systems in Queensland — especially K’gari (Fraser Island) and the mainland Cooloola section. We acknowledge the Butchulla people as Traditional Owners of K’gari, and the Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi people as Traditional Owners of Cooloola sand country, and their continuing connection to Country. This guide does not retell restricted sacred stories.

Most successful first visits balance an iconic lake (Boorangoora), one or two beach icons (Maheno, Eli Creek, Champagne Pools), and honest permit / tide / dingo limits — not a forced all-day beach thrash on arrival. K’gari freshwater lakes & inland rainforest

Best for: First-visit swims, photography, tours, families who want lakes over long beach driving

Perched lakes on pure sand — especially Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) — plus rainforest-on-sand walks around Central Station / Pile Valley. The postcard heart of many first visits, with strict shore rules and dingo-aware day-use culture.

Reached after ferry/barge to K’gari then inland sand tracks (4WD). From Rainbow Beach/Inskip or Hervey Bay/River Heads depending on your chosen gateway. Allow ferry buffers; soft tracks punish rushed schedules.

75-Mile Beach on K’gari (Fraser Island) — long sand beach corridor

K’gari eastern beach corridor

Best for: Experienced sand drivers, multi-stop beach days, photography of wreck and rock pools

Tide-critical 4WD beach highway linking Maheno wreck, Eli Creek, Champagne Pools, coloured sands and long sand runs. Maximum drama, maximum need for skill, recovery gear and honest turn-around culture.

Beach driving after ferry arrival. High tide can block progress. Aircraft may use beach sections. Plan segments with fuel and tide buffers from Eurong, northern camps or your tour base.

Cooloola section (mainland)

Best for: Day trips, first sand-driving practice, families based at Rainbow Beach or Noosa, multi-day beach camps

Mainland Great Sandy: coloured sand cliffs, beach driving toward Double Island Point, Carlo Sandblow, Noosa North Shore / Teewah access stories, and camping with its own permit logic. Ideal sand adventure without full island barge commitment.

Access from Rainbow Beach / Inskip corridor or southern Noosa North Shore / Teewah systems depending on your plan. 4WD required for many beach and track sections; some day-use is easier. Check VAP coverage carefully.

Best for: Every visitor — read before you book ferries or camps

The non-negotiable operating system for Great Sandy: Vehicle Access Permits, camping bookings, ferry/barge logistics, tide windows, Be Dingo-Safe (wongari) rules, no dogs, no campfires on K’gari, and self-sufficient fuel/water/recovery planning.

Gateways: River Heads (Hervey Bay side) and Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach side) for K’gari barges; Cooloola via Rainbow Beach / Noosa North Shore systems. Always verify current operators and conditions.

Best for: Choosing a base that matches ferry ends, vehicle type and trip length

Where to sleep and stage from: Rainbow Beach / Inskip for southern K’gari barge and Cooloola; Hervey Bay / River Heads for northern approaches; Noosa / Tewantin for southern Cooloola; on-island resorts and booked camps for multi-day immersion.

From Brisbane: allow real highway time to Sunshine Coast / Fraser Coast hubs plus ferry buffers. Do not plan a same-morning Brisbane departure into a tight low-tide beach run without slack.

World Heritage K’gari & Traditional Owners

Best for: Context before any itinerary; ethical travel planning

K’gari is World Heritage listed as the world’s largest sand island. Butchulla people are Traditional Custodians of K’gari; Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi connections are central to Cooloola Country. Visitors are guests — leave only footprints, respect cultural guidance, and use official channels for cultural learning.

Cultural respect applies everywhere you drive and camp — not only at signed interpretive sites.
