Plan your visit to Great Sandy
What ruins a first visit here is not a missed lookout — it is a tide-gated beach, a Vehicle Access Permit you did not buy, a River Heads booking you treated like a walk-up, or a wongari (dingo) rule you ignored at a lake car park. This page is the decision layer Queensland Parks will not write as a holiday brief: then official sources for live status.

How long do I need?
Typical drive bands (not a clocked diary): Brisbane–Rainbow Beach ~2.5–3.5 hours each way;Brisbane–Hervey Bay ~3–3.5 hours; Brisbane–Noosa ~1.5–2 hours in ordinary traffic. Gold Coast is longer. Sydney or Melbourne is a flight plus a gateway night — not a same-day K’gari circuit. People who should not attempt a “Brisbane morning, lake + 75-Mile + ferry home” day: anyone treating Inskip or River Heads as a 10-minute afterthought, or stacking Champagne Pools after a late barge.
| Shape | On the ground | Honest calendar | Who should not |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 hours | Rainbow Beach coloured-sand viewpoints / Carlo if already local | Only if you already sleep in Rainbow / Noosa | Brisbane lunch-hour visitors hoping for K’gari |
| Half day | Cooloola colour + one beach segment or a licensed K’gari day tour (operator clock) | A full calendar day from Brisbane once you count doors-to-doors | Self-drive groups adding Maheno + Eli + Champagne after one barge |
| Full day | Tour: lake + selected beach icons. Self-drive: lake or a tide-honest beach module — not both as a dare | Early gateway start; protect the return barge/tide | Anyone leaving Brisbane after 8am for a first-ever island self-drive |
| Overnight+ | Booked QPWS camp or Eurong-area bed; next-day lake or beach with slack | The honest K’gari self-drive product | Freestyle camping, dogs, or “we’ll buy VAP on the barge” |
Vehicle Access Permits & camping
Self-drivers need a valid Vehicle Access Permit (VAP) for designated beach and sand-track driving — buy only through official Queensland Parks channels. Camping requires a separate booking via the Queensland National Parks Booking Service. Peak school holidays and long weekends sell out; book early.
Official entry points: Vehicle Access Permits · National Parks Booking Service · K’gari park page · Cooloola park page. We never take commission on VAPs or official camping permits.See also where to stay.
Getting there · ferries · bases
Great Sandy National Park spans K’gari (Fraser Island) and the mainland Cooloola section (Rainbow Beach / Noosa hinterland sand country). K’gari access is via ferry or barge systems — commonly Hervey Bay / River Heads approaches or Rainbow Beach / Inskip Point — then 4WD sand tracks and beach corridors. Cooloola can be a day-trip or multi-day beach drive without a full island crossing.
Rainbow Beach is a practical gateway for Cooloola and Inskip barge logistics. Hervey Bay supports many River Heads ferry products and mainland stays. Noosa / Tewantin work for southern Cooloola approaches. On-island bases such as Eurong and commercial resorts suit multi-day K’gari stays when booked.
Do not treat ferry queues, tide windows and soft inland tracks as five-minute afterthoughts. Build slack into every day plan. Confirm current advice on the official K’gari park page and operator schedules.
Fuel, food, medical — last town, not the beach
Boorangoora and 75-Mile Beach are not service centres. Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay and Noosa / Tewantin are. Hours and which pump is open change — this is intent, not a live directory. Emergencies: 000.
Families
Last easy toilets, snacks and a supermarket are in Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay or Noosa — not at the silica shore. Eat before lake day-use; many shores are water-only. Prefer fenced camps on K’gari overnight.
Early starts / barge queues
Fill fuel in Rainbow before Inskip, or in Hervey Bay / River Heads before a booked western barge. Official notes: Inskip barges typically run without bookings (hours change, ~10 min); River Heads needs bookings (often 30–50 min). Do not treat on-island fuel as a bailout.
Closest to the icon
Rainbow Beach for Cooloola colour + Inskip. Hervey Bay for River Heads ferries and mainland recovery nights. Eurong-area beds for eastern-beach multi-day. Noosa / Tewantin for southern Cooloola — not a shortcut to Lake McKenzie.
Medical & official
Triple Zero for emergencies. Mainland hospitals and clinics sit in Hervey Bay / Gympie / Noosa catchments — not a clinic list on this page. Permits, camping and dingo rules stay on Queensland Parks — K’gari and Cooloola. Booking service: official camping / VAP.
Map & orientation
After permits and gateways: Great Sandy spans World Heritage K’gari (Fraser Island) and mainland Cooloola. Use this embed for rough context only — ferry ends, beach corridors and track status change. Confirm pins and conditions on official sources before you drive or barge.
Orientation only — ferry operators, beach access and park alerts change. Open in Google Maps for your own route planning.
Tides, sand driving & beach realism
- Plan beach runs around tide tables — high tide can block 75-Mile Beach and Cooloola beach segments.
- Deflate for sand; carry recovery boards, compressor, rated straps and a full spare if self-driving.
- Treat icons as optional modules — reverse when tide or recoveries stack.
- Do not climb on the Maheno wreck or enter closed/eroding areas.
- Check marine stinger and weather advice for the season; screenshot tides and permits offline.
Official orientation: BOM tide tables · park alerts.
Dingo (wongari) safety & respect
- Be Dingo-Safe: never feed or approach; secure food; supervise children; prefer fenced camps with family groups.
- No dogs. No freestyle camping. No campfires on K’gari (verify current rules).
- Lake shores such as Boorangoora often allow water only — eat elsewhere as signed.
- Respect Butchulla Country on K’gari and Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi Country on Cooloola — public interpretive material only.
- Recreational drones may be restricted (e.g. Lake McKenzie) — do not assume you can fly.
Packing list (sand island / Cooloola baseline)
- Recovery boards, compressor, tyre gauge, rated straps, full spare (self-drive)
- Closed-toe water shoes / sturdy sandals for creeks and boardwalks
- UPF long sleeves, wide-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen, polarised sunglasses
- Hydration for full self-sufficient days; dry bags for phone, permits and clothes
- Headlamp, insect repellent, first aid, gas cooker (where fires banned)
- Printed or offline VAP, camping confirmation, tide screenshots and emergency contacts

FAQ
Plan-your-visit FAQs
Permits, ferries, tides, dingoes and bases — tap to expand. Live fees and closures always belong on Queensland Parks channels.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Do I need a Vehicle Access Permit for K’gari or Cooloola?
Yes if you are driving a private or hire vehicle on designated beach and sand tracks that require a VAP. Permits are issued through official Queensland Parks channels — this site never sells or affiliates permits. Tours that provide transport often handle permits differently; confirm with the operator.
How do camping bookings work?
Book camping through the official Queensland National Parks Booking Service. Peak school holidays and long weekends sell out early. Commercial resorts and barges are separate products. We never take commission on official camping permits. Families overnighting on K’gari should prefer fenced camps where available.
Which ferry or barge should I use for K’gari?
Northern access commonly uses Hervey Bay / River Heads systems; southern access commonly uses Rainbow Beach / Inskip Point barges. Operators, schedules, vehicle limits and erosion impacts change — verify live products before you lock tides and camps. Build queue slack into every day plan.
Tour vs self-drive — which should I choose?
Choose a licensed tour if you lack sand-driving experience, your hire terms forbid beach driving, or you have one day. Self-drive works for competent 4WD groups with recovery gear, multi-day bookings, tide discipline and dingo-safe camping habits. See the self-drive vs tour itinerary on this site.
What is the best time to visit?
Shoulder seasons often balance weather and crowds; school holidays are busiest. Winter can bring cooler nights and heightened dingo awareness around whelping season (typically June–August — verify). Summer brings heat, storms and marine-stinger considerations. Check forecasts and park alerts before travel.
Are dogs allowed?
No. Dogs and other domestic pets are not allowed in Great Sandy National Park sections covered by standard QPWS rules for K’gari and Cooloola. Confirm current rules on the official park pages.
Can I have a campfire on K’gari?
Campfires are prohibited on K’gari under standard park rules (verify live). Use gas cookers only where permitted. Cooloola rules can differ by site — always check your booking and official conditions.
Where should I stay for Cooloola vs K’gari?
Rainbow Beach suits Cooloola and southern barge logistics. Hervey Bay suits many River Heads ferry products. Noosa / Tewantin suits southern Cooloola approaches. Eurong and other on-island commercial stays suit multi-day K’gari circuits when booked early. QPWS camping is a separate official product — never affiliated here.

Guided tours
K’gari / Fraser Island searches — prioritise operators who respect Butchulla protocols, dingo rules and park law
