Park area guide
Cooloola section (mainland)
Mainland Great Sandy: coloured sand cliffs, beach driving toward Double Island Point, Carlo Sandblow, Noosa North Shore / Teewah access stories, and camping with its own permit logic. Ideal sand adventure without full island barge commitment.
- Best for: Day trips, first sand-driving practice, families based at Rainbow Beach or Noosa, multi-day beach camps
- Time: Day trip for coloured sands; overnight+ for Double Island Point circuits
- Access from Rainbow Beach / Inskip corridor or southern Noosa North Shore / Teewah systems depending on your plan. 4WD required for many beach and track sections; some day-use is easier. Check VAP coverage carefully.

Mainland sand-mass, full seriousness
Cooloola is not a consolation prize. Coloured cliffs and long beach horizons deliver the Great Sandy aesthetic with different logistics — often better for first sand drivers based on the Sunshine Coast or Rainbow Beach.
If your end goal is multi-day K’gari, Cooloola can be excellent rehearsal. If your goal is simply great sand country, Cooloola can be the whole trip.

Can I do Cooloola without a 4WD?
Some viewpoints and town-adjacent experiences are easier, but many classic beach drives and remote sections require 4WD and sand skill. Match the itinerary to the vehicle you actually have.
