Itineraries
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
These plans are built for real sand-island logistics — Vehicle Access Permits, ferry buffers, tide windows, dingo-safe camping and tour vs self-drive honesty — not fantasy “every icon before lunch” checklists. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip.
Every itinerary still defers to Queensland Parks / QPWS for permits, camping, conditions and alerts. Print any plan from the page, or grab the free Practical Planner.

Full day (tour or self-drive with buffers)
Classic first visit: Lake McKenzie + beach icons
Best for: First-timers who want Boorangoora and 1–2 beach icons without multi-day camping complexity
The high-volume first path: Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) plus Maheno and/or Eli Creek when tides and time allow — usually best as a licensed day tour, or a carefully buffered self-drive with VAP, ferry and recovery kit sorted.

2 days / 1 night (extendable)
Family overnight: fenced camp emphasis
Best for: Families who want island time with dingo-aware camping culture
Prioritise booked fenced camping, short high-reward stops (Boorangoora, Eli Creek), strict food storage, children within arm’s reach, and zero ambition for long soft-sand heroics after dark.

3–5 days
Multi-day self-drive K’gari circuit
Best for: Experienced sand drivers with recovery gear, booked camps and full self-sufficiency
Slow circuit combining lakes, beach icons, rainforest-on-sand and honest rest days — only for groups who already understand tide gates, VAP camping and dingo rules.

Day trip (overnight optional)
Cooloola day: coloured sands & beach
Best for: Mainland sand adventure from Rainbow Beach or Noosa side without K’gari barge
Coloured sand cliffs, beach driving segments toward Double Island Point when tides allow, optional Carlo Sandblow — full Great Sandy drama with mainland bases.

Full day with early start
Photography / light-optimised day
Best for: Photographers prioritising Boorangoora colour and Maheno golden hour
Structure the day around light, not maximum stops: lake morning, rest, beach late light — only if tides cooperate. Skip when weather is flat and protect equipment from sand and spray.

Planning framework (use before booking)
Decision day: self-drive vs organised tour
Best for: Groups still choosing between hire 4WD self-drive and licensed tours
An honest filter: vehicle skill, recovery kit, kids and dingo comfort, tide confidence, and whether your holiday joy is driving sand or swimming in turquoise lakes.

K’gari / Fraser Island searches — prioritise operators who respect Butchulla protocols, dingo rules and park law
