Wrong base town: Rainbow Beach vs Hervey Bay vs Noosa
The first-visit failure is picking Noosa for Lake McKenzie or Hervey Bay for Cooloola colour. Match gateway to barge, tide and which sand-mass you actually want.

Best for: First visitors choosing where to sleep before K’gari or Cooloola
Unofficial guide — always verify permits, beach conditions, swimming advice and camping rules with Queensland Parks — K’gari and Cooloola. Photos are orientation only — not live conditions.

If you sleep in the wrong gateway, the park does not fail you — the transfer does. Rainbow Beach is the Cooloola-and-Inskip town. Hervey Bay is the River Heads town. Noosa / Tewantin is southern Cooloola and Sunshine Coast, not a shortcut to Boorangoora.
This is a decision article, not a scenery list. Pick the base that matches the barge you will actually use and the icons you will actually keep. Then book Vehicle Access Permit and camping on official channels if you self-drive.
Not walked — planning from official Queensland Parks getting-around notes (Inskip vs River Heads) and typical mainland drive bands. Confirm live barge hours and bookings with operators.
The failure
Typical fail: book Noosa because it is famous, then discover Lake McKenzie is an island inland-sand problem behind a barge you did not research. Or book Hervey Bay for “Fraser Island” and spend the Cooloola day on the wrong coast. Or sleep Rainbow and assume River Heads is a 10-minute hop.
Official getting-around notes: vehicle barges from Inskip Point (about 15 minutes from Rainbow Beach to Hook Point; typically no bookings; trip about 10 minutes; hours change) versus River Heads to Kingfisher Bay / Wanggoolba Creek (bookings required; often 30–50 minutes). Those are two different holidays.
Match base to intent
Families who want showers and a supermarket: mainland Rainbow or Hervey Bay plus a licensed day tour. Families overnighting on K’gari: prefer fenced camps and Be Dingo-Safe — not a beach-tent experiment.
Early barge queues: sleep Rainbow the night before Inskip. Booked western ferry: sleep Hervey Bay and treat River Heads as a timetable, not a vibe. Eastern-beach icons for two or three days: Eurong-area commercial beds or booked camps — still a VAP and tide plan.
See the stay hub for commercial search links and the visit page for fuel / food / medical by intent. Do not treat three Booking buttons as the plan.
What to do instead
Write the island or Cooloola decision first. Then pick one gateway. Then buy VAP and camps officially if self-driving. Then screenshot tides. Then name the demotion order (Champagne Pools first to drop).

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I day-trip K’gari from Noosa without a tour?
Possible in theory with a lot of slack and the right barge product — a bad first-visit default. Licensed day tours from Rainbow / Hervey Bay / Noosa exist because the self-drive clock is unforgiving. Confirm operator inclusions.
Is Rainbow Beach “on Fraser Island”?
No. Rainbow Beach is the mainland Cooloola / Inskip gateway. K’gari starts after the barge. Cooloola coloured sands are a Great Sandy day without the island exam.
